Fighters against Illegal Immigration Lose their Leader
		01.05.2009
The MAII leader resigned from his office under the Kremlin pressure, according to
the "Expertiza" (Examination) fund.
The leader of the Movement against Illegal Immigration (MAII) Alexander Belov
abdicated the responsibility of the head of the organization. The experts
attributed his resignation to the Kremlin's unwillingness to see such an odious
leader leading the project.
On Wednesday, April 29, the MAII site published a statement by Alexander Belov
(real name - Potkin), in which he announced his resignation from the position of
the head of the organization. According to him, the reason for this decision was
a criminal suit, filed against him. He is accused of inciting ethnic hatred.
Belov's example might be followed by the leader of "Slavic Union" Dmitry
Demushkin.
"In the near future I will be sentenced under the notorious Art.282 of the
Criminal Code, - Belov's address reads. - High-ranking law enforcement officials
have confidentially assured me that this sentence will, of course,
be an indictment. I do not see the slightest reason to doubt their prophecies."
In this regard, Belov, who celebrates his 33rd birthday on April 29, said he
should resign from the position, so as not to compromise the work of the
organization.
Following the resignation of Belov, the question of the movement's leadership
will be solved at the MAII congress. Prior to its convocation, the organization
will be managed by the National Council of MAII, consisting of the
representatives of various regional groups.
When the MAII was just established, the experts stated this was the Kremlin
project, recalls the head of the "Expertiza" fund Mark Urnov. By creating a
movement, the authorities had hoped to take control of disparate factions of the
nationalists. However, the level of xenophobia in the society has only rosed
over the years, and the MAII became an influential political force. "Today the
authorities have no common opinion on what to do with MAII, - told Urnov to the
GZT.RU. - Many members of the top brass share the ideas of the movement. So the
Kremlin is not going to close down the MAII, but they decided to remove its
odious leader, Belov".
The criminal case against Belov is filed in Moscow Dorogomilovsky district court. According to the investigation, during the November 4, 2007 meeting Belov insulted Jews, Asians, and the authorities. In particular, the indictment says: "in order to implement the intent to incite hatred and enmity towards Jews, Potkin knowingly made comments, criticizing the representatives of
the Russia supreme executive power in the offensive form, attributing the latter
to the Jews in the negative sense". Also, according to the investigation, Belov
had stated that the victory was approaching, and the "hordes of invaders from
Central Asia or the Caucasus" would not be able to stop it.
