                  Memorial for Nikolaev Jews

                  Memorial for Nikolaev Jews

                  07.09.2011, Holocaust

A recent event marked the 70 year anniversary since the day that Nazi occupiers and Romanian collaborators began to engage in the mass murder of Jews in the Nikolaev region. In this region, more than 200,000 Jews from Nikolaev, Odessa and Moldova were murdered.
The most famous place where such mass executions of Jews took place was the village of Voskresenskoe. In 1998, a monument was erected at the site of these horrific events. On August 25, 2011 at this monument, a memorial gathering took place with the participation of the Jewish community, led by Rabbi Shalom Gottlieb, along with representatives of the regional administration, veterans, residents of Voskresenskoe, students and teachers of the Ohr Menachem Chabad Day School.
At the memorial gathering, presentations were made by the head of the Department for Nationalities Victor Chebotarev, chairman of the Voskresenskoe Council Sergei Karamarenko, chairman of the Jewish Veterans Association Miron Endelshtein, and director of the Jewish Culture Society Mikhail Goldenberg. In addition, numerous veterans and former prisoners of concentration camps spoke to the crowd gathered on this occasion.
The Jewish Veterans Association run by the Nikolaev Jewish community, and the Jewish community itself, are sincerely grateful to the regional administration and specifically Nikolay Petrovich Kruglov, heads of district administrations and the chairmen of village councils, who have supported the maintainance of the monuments and sites of Jews’ mass executions during the Nazi occupation of the Nikolaev region.
